Berlin University Hospital once again impresses in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Smart Hospitals” ranking and in the ranking of specialized hospitals
Berlin, September 11, 2025
Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin has been ranked 8th in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Smart Hospitals” ranking for the second year in a row, making it the only European hospital among the top 10. This ranking recognizes institutions that are leaders in healthcare innovation and use advanced technologies to transform healthcare, improve patient outcomes, and promote public health. Charité also achieved top rankings in several disciplines in the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2026” ranking.
“Receiving this recognition as one of the world’s leading smart hospitals is a validation of our digitalization strategy. It encourages us to continue integrating digital innovations into everyday clinical practice in a way that directly benefits patients,” says Prof. Heyo K. Kroemer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Charité.
Telemedicine and Connected Technology Reduce Workload
Key components of Charité’s digitalization strategy include connected medical technology, telemedicine, AI-assisted diagnostics, and a new central hospital information system, which is currently undergoing the procurement process. These technologies reduce the workload for doctors and nurses, help accelerate diagnoses, and better tailor treatments to patient needs.
Furthermore, the structured digitization of medical records and the development of a central data platform are important projects for the digitalization of the Charité. The goal is to use high-quality clinical data efficiently and securely – both for direct patient care and for research. “The intelligent use of health data enables new scientific insights, which in turn can directly influence treatment,” emphasizes the CEO.
Top positions also in the ranking of specialized hospitals
The Charité is among the world leaders not only in digitization, but also in specialist rankings: In the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, and orthopedics, it ranks among the top 10 of the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2026.” Further excellent rankings were achieved in the fields of oncology, gastroenterology, and pediatrics. “The fact that we are among the best hospitals in the world in so many different disciplines demonstrates the breadth of our expertise. It is the interplay of highly qualified staff, scientific excellence, and modern infrastructure that makes these successes possible,” says Prof. Kroemer.
The “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals” ranking by US magazine Newsweek, compiled in collaboration with the data platform Statista, recognizes leading specialty hospitals worldwide in twelve medical disciplines. It is based on a combination of a global online survey of medical professionals, the analysis of quality certificates, and the evaluation of data on outcome quality and patient satisfaction. The “World’s Best Smart Hospitals” ranking recognizes hospitals that excel in the exemplary use of innovative digital technologies in patient care.
