Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany today reiterated the need for a secure peace and security in Somalia.
Speaking at a joint press conference with President Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia at the Federal Chancellery, Chancellor Scholz said a secure and peaceful Somalia could make an important contribution to greater stability in the Horn of Africa region.
He pledged Germany’s support in combating the activities of the Al-Shabaab militant organization in Somalia “within the framework of European Union and United Nations missions, for example with police officers and civilian aid workers.”
According to the Chancellor, Germany’s humanitarian cooperation with Somalia was aimed at the citizens who are bearing the brunt of terrorism as well as from the consequences of climate change.
The two leaders also discussed the possibility of working together to repatriate Somali nationals who do not have the necessary permission to stay in Germany.
“We need to speed up procedures for those who have committed serious crimes in Germany. This is also in the interests of the very large community of Somalis here in Germany, who get on well here and are well integrated.”
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud observed that Germany was a steadfast partner in Somalia’s development.
“Our partnership has spanned several decades. Historically, Germany has always played a key role in promoting technical vocational education and training in Somalia.
“These programmes have been instrumental in empowering Somali youth, equipping them with the skills they need to support their communities and drive economic growth,” says the Somali President.
President Sheikh Mohamud described his talks with Chancellor Scholz was an important step in realizing the shared visions between Somalia and Germany.
