diabetesDE – Deutsche Diabetes-Hilfe has been hosting the Diabetes Charity Gala in Berlin for eleven years, putting people with diabetes, their stories and their commitment in the spotlight on the evening.

This year, there were a conspicuous number of Influencers at the TIPI am Kanzleramt on October 20, 2022.

People who share their life with diabetes in social media, on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube as well as TikTok and thus contribute to the education and destigmatization of diabetes.

Influencers sometimes have up to 170,000 followers and thus reach more people than traditional media. So it was only logical that one of the fundraising projects was the #SagEsLaut awareness campaign, in which people with diabetes aggressively express their wishes and needs.

The event was followed by 300 invited guests. The gala was hosted by Andrea Ballschuh and Harry Wijnvoord, who is himself affected by type 2 diabetes.

Sports presenter legend Waldemar Hartmann, actresses Rebecca Immanuel and Sabine Vitua, actor Falk Willy Wild and influencers Fiorella Eickhoff and Visa Vie also got involved for the good cause.

The key note came from TV journalist Kay-Sölve Richter. For the first time, the Thomas Fuchsberger Award was presented twice, with actress Tanja Wedhorn giving the respective laudatory speech.

“This gala was very special, because we passed it on to social media under the hashtag #DiabetesGala through the influencers who attended, and thus a closed event nevertheless achieved a wide reach,” says Nicole Mattig-Fabian, executive director of the non-profit organization diabetesDE – Deutsche Diabetes-Hilfe.

As every year, parliamentarians, celebrities and representatives from industry, health insurance companies and associations as well as self-help were invited.

A total of almost 100,000 euros was raised, which will now be distributed to the following projects over the next two years: The “Ketoacidosis Project from Saxony”, the “Awareness Campaign #SagEsLaut” and the emergency telephone “Dia-Engel”.

The highlight of the gala was the eleventh presentation of the Thomas Fuchsberger Award.

For the first time, the jury decided to honour two prize winners: Christa Mischke, who has been volunteering for years to read the Diabetes Journal for visually impaired and blind people as an audiobook, and Martin Holder, MD, who launched a nationwide ketoacidosis prevention campaign with the dissemination of four warning signs for the development of type 1 diabetes.

The laudatory speech for both award winners was given by actress Tanja Wedhorn. The prize money totaling 10,000 euros was donated by the MedTriX Group.

The Diabetes Charity Gala was supported this year by MedTriX, Abbott, Dexcom, IKK classic, Medtronic, Melitta, Wort & Bild and Boehringer Ingelheim.
