Opinion: Who Is Bismark Agbelengor? by Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., PhD

Jean Adukwei Mensa, Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)

It was only a matter of time, and a very short time at that, before whoever was behind the Boko Haram-inspired letter threatening the life and professional integrity of Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa, Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), was exposed for the veritable charlatan that s/he was. With the National Democratic Congress (NDC), it is never certain whether such criminal mastermind was male or female. As I have already pointed out in several of my previous columns, in the scandalous case of the Montie Trio or the Montie Three, there were as many party women as men who staunchly backed the very barbaric and public threat by Messrs. Maase, Nelson and Gunn to royally rape then-Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood. I only had to casually peek at the first ten names appended to the hate-filled threat to the IEC Chair to conclude that this most despicable and disrespectful shot at Mrs. Mensa had been composed, as one critic later put it, by a reprobate bunch of Mahama-paid National Democratic Congress’ apparatchiks.

I have already appealed to the Minister of National Security, the Minister of the Interior, and the Attorney-General and Justice Minister to promptly explore the possibility of charging the signatories of the terror-charged letter with what clearly appears to be an unmistakable incitement to hatred. Now, we have two professors from the Koforidua Technical University (KTU), namely, Messrs. Smile Dzisi and Benjamin Kwofie, vehemently denying that they had consented to having their names appended to the aforesaid “Warning Letter” to Mrs. Mensa. Americans have a saying that “Desperate situations require the implementation of desperate measures.” I hope that Messrs. Albert Kan Dapaah, Bryan Acheampong, James Oppong-Boanuh, the Inspector-General of the Ghana Police Service (IGP of GPS) and Attorney-General Gloria Akuffo are paying sedulous attention and giving this most dangerous threat all the attention that it inescapably deserves.

But even more significantly, what I wanted to note here is the fact that in my earlier rejoinder, that was published several days ago on this very Modernghana.com website, I called attention to the fact that the life-threatening missive, either composed or approved by the 100 named professors, glaringly ignored the fact that the overwhelming majority of Ghanaian professors and/or academics and scholars had not consented to having their names appended to the same. The preceding alone made it patently clear that those professors and lecturers at our taxpayer-financed public tertiary academies who had consented to having their names appended to the Jean Mensa-threatening letter seriously lacked credibility and common sense. At the barest minimum, these professors required immediate psychological and psychiatric examination before being permitted to have their jobs back or continue teaching or rendering any professorial and professional services to any of our country’s taxpayer-financed tertiary academies.

Now, of course, with the withdrawal of the names of Professors Dzisi and Kwofie, the list of the professors who had clearly threatened the life of Mrs. Mensa has been reduced to 98. But, of course, since the prime engineer of this life-threatening letter also tells us that, in fact, it was 101 professors who had consented to having their names appended to the letter threatening to physically liquidate Mrs. Mensa, and not 100, as originally reported by the media, we are presently left with the names of 99 would-be-assassins of Mrs. Mensa. What is equally significant to note here is the call by Dr. Benjamin Kwofie, one of the two professors or lecturers of the Koforidua Technical University (KTU), who have since dissociated themselves from the lethal letter, to have the Vice-Chancellor of the KTU investigate the matter and promptly have the Electoral Commissioner duly notified that Messrs. Smile Dzisi and Benjamin Kwofie are not signatories or participants of any plot to have Mrs. Mensa summarily assassinated.

We know and proudly cherish the fact that Messrs. Dzisi and Kwofie have absolutely nothing to do with this seditious plot, because we are also reliably informed by the media that these two gentlemen have received unqualified apologies from Mr. Bismark Agbelengor, the apparent criminal mastermind of the threatening letter. Now, what all patriotic and peace-loving Ghanaian citizens have a right to know from our National Security Operatives is the following: Who is Bismark Agbelengor?
