Opinion: Poor NPP Communication Apparatus to Blame for National Cathedral Brouhaha – By Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., Ph.D.

It is now patently clear to me, at least, that the decision by the Akufo-Addo-led government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to either sponsor or facilitate the construction of an Inter-Denominational Christian Cathedral in the heart of our nation’s capital was perfectly kosher or democratically in order. The decision is kosher because it has just been brought to my attention that a National Mosque already exists in the Ghanaian capital of Accra, that was constructed by the Turkish Government with the overt support of the Rawlings-led populist regime of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Asia 728x90

If the foregoing observation is true or has validity, then it perfectly stands to reason for the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party government to press ahead with its very noble intention of having a National Cathedral established for the express benefit of the Christian majority populace of the country. But what I want to underscore here in no uncertain terms is that former President Jerry John Rawlings flagrantly violated the highest legal instrument of the land, that is, the 1992 Constitution, when the former junta leader and long-reigning strongman collaborated with the Turkish Government, the government of a bona fide Islamic State, to construct a Mosque on the soils or landed property of a predominantly Christian Ghana, if Mr. Rawlings, in the eudemonious spirit of democratic equal opportunities, had not made any plans or arrangements to have a National Cathedral constructed for the approximately 75-percent of Ghanaian citizens who profess the Christian Faith.

This is what needs to be emphasized by the staunch supporters of the establishment of an inter-denominational National Cathedral for either Ghanaian Protestant Christians or the greater Ghanaian Christian Community at large. Indeed, by rather unwisely failing to highlight the fact that previous National Democratic Congress’ governments doggedly and egregiously promoted the interests of Ghanaian Muslims to the glaring exclusion of their Christian counterparts, the Communications Directorate of both the New Patriotic Party and the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) flagitiously erred. So, whose fault is it that the Christian Community’s Leaders in the country are now being envisaged with self-righteous anger and suspicion by their hypocritical brothers and sisters in the Islamic Community? In other words, if Ghanaian Muslims have been savvy or smart enough to studiously look towards their own best interests, why are Ghanaian Christians and their leaders behaving sheepishly as if they are foreigners in the very country in which they constitute an overwhelming majority, and to whose culture they have immensely contributed more than any other religious community in the country?

Well, about the only salient equation or factor that appears to be missing here is the equal need for the leadership Christian Council of Ghana to locate a predominantly Christian country, possibly in the West, whose government is equally willing, albeit rather belatedly, to checkmate what may be aptly termed as “The Turkish Menace” or the latter country’s government’s apparent interference in the religious and internal affairs of our country, with the evidently criminal complicity of the kleptocratic and self-serving leadership of National Democratic Congress, of course, by sponsoring the construction of a National Cathedral in the country. Come on, the National cathedral Project must go on unhinderedly.
