NPP position on teachers agitation is hypocritical – Quashigah

Rechard Quashigah, NDC Propaganda Secretary
The Propaganda Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Richard Quashigah has rubbished claims by Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey that the government is incompetent to manage agitations within the teacher’s front.

Jake Obestebi Lamptey on Monday March 7, asked the Mills-Mahama government to stop paying lip service to the motivation of teachers and deal with their concerns.

In a statement signed by the Party Chairman, it said the NPP is promising the teachers of Ghana their full support in helping to make the public aware of the shameless and incompetent way their concerns have failed to be addressed.

According to the NPP Chairman, the lies the NDC government continues to tell teachers is finally catching up with them.

However, speaking in an interview with Citi News Richard Quashigah said the NPP’s position is unfortunate and hypocritical.

He added that the government is doing everything possible to ensure that the concerns raised by teachers across the country are addressed.

“It is a very unfortunate statement by Jake Obetsebi Lamptey. The NPP and Jake Obestebi Lamptey must be reminded that despite the challenge that has bedevilled the implementation of the Single Spine for teachers serious efforts are being made to address this problem”.

“Even under the confusion that we still have on our hands the pay of teachers is better than the experience under the eight year rule of the NPP and that is why, I find Mr Obestsebi’s comments very hypocritical. This only shows the insincerity and the myopic character of Jake Obetsebi Lamptey and the NPP”.

Teachers across the country have been agitating following heightened expectations of better salaries after they were migrated to the single spine salary scheme failed to materialise.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), have declared a nationwide strike effective Wednesday March 9, 2011.

The action follows a breakdown in talks over efforts to resolve discrepancies in their salaries following their migration onto the Single Spine Salary Structure.

The Vice President of NAGRAT, Angel Kabornu has told Citi FM that its members would only return to the classrooms if their allowances – which have been suspended until the standardization and harmonization of the salary structure – are restored immediately, pending the final harmonization.
