Ghana Election Petition: Accept verdict live in courtroom – Appiah-Menkah

A member of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Akenten Appiah-Menkah, has called on the parties in the presidential election petition to make “the most crucial decision” of accepting the Supreme Court judgement live in the courtroom for the millions of Ghanaians across the country to see and hear through the media.

He said the most crucial decision in the election petition was not the judgement to be delivered on Thursday, but the open and immediate acceptance of the decision live in front of the television cameras.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Kumasi last Saturday, the senior citizen, who was a member of the Constitutional Review Committee, said: “public-spirited Ghanaians would not want the situation where someone would go home only to say I don’t agree with this or that decision of the court.”

“Such a situation can spark confusion in the country and no right-thinking Ghanaian would want this to happen,” he said.

Mr Appiah-Menkah said: “We want to hear from them in court immediately after the judgement assuring all and sundry that they accept the outcome.”

This will push their supporters to appreciate the situation and stay calm.

Mr Appiah-Menkah stated that Ghana was standing at the crossroads, and nothing must be done to disturb the peace of the nation.

The senior citizen pointed out that while accepting the result in the courtroom, they should also not hesitate to convey to their supporters right in front of television cameras the need to take the Supreme Court decision in good faith.

“When they do this, they will place their supporters in a situation that would prevent them from any activity that can endanger our peace,” he said.

Mr Appiah-Menkah pointed out that the Constitution of Ghana had given the Supreme Court the power to decide on the matter before it, so the people must respect whatever decision they would make.
