The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it has submitted samples of 2,096 separate cases of double and multiple registration from all the 10 regions to the Electoral Commission (EC).

In a press statement, the party said the separate cases could be grouped under three main forms: cases of double and multiple registration with multiple photographs; cases of double and multiple registration with multiple voters ID numbers, and cases of the same registration details and photographs in different polling stations.

It said the pile of additional evidence was presented to the EC, accompanied by a cover letter signed by the General Secretary of the party, Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, detailing the extent of inaccuracies within the current register.

The submission of the 2,096 separate cases is in addition to the evidence of foreign voters and scanned pictures in the register on which the party had already made a comprehensive presentation to the EC.

New voters register

The statement said Mr Agyepong, who worked closely with the party’s IT team, had uncovered the existence of thousands of separate cases of double and multiple registration by various people across the country in the current register, making the need for a new voters register to replace the current register relevant.

It indicated that the submission of the samples was additional evidence to back its case on the flawed nature of the current register, which necessitated the compilation of a new one.

“The latest evidence presented to the commission calls into question the whole credibility of the biometric register and whether the EC actually carried out de-duplication of the register, as it should have done and claims to have done, since de-duplicating a biometric register will automatically eliminate all such double and multiple registration, no matter the form in which they come.

“The general secretary suggested that if, indeed, the EC conducted a de-duplication process on the register, then this revelation by the party is a further indication of how the whole database of the commission and its IT set-up have been compromised to allow for such multiple entries as they appear on the register, similar to the case of the scanned pictures in the register,” it added.

Case sealed

It said it had, with the evidence provided ,sealed the case for a fresh voters register.
The statement recalled that on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, the NPP submitted to the EC and the public what it termed evidence of the existence of more than 76,000 Togolese on Ghana’s voters register after a review of less than 10 per cent of the registers of the two countries.

It said the running mate of the 2016 flag bearer of the party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, while addressing a press conference in Accra on August 18, 2015, had said perhaps what was more damning was evidence of the existence of various scanned pictures in the current register, an issue the EC had not responded to as yet.
