The President who met with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in Warri, Delta State, on Friday, March 25, as part of ongoing consultations with different bodies and interest groups stressed the imperative of continuity in government, adding that current investments in the petro-chemical industry, the gas revolution he launched yesterday and agriculture would stimulate the local economy and create thousands of jobs for the youths.

Noting that he is better qualified for the job than the other presidential contestants, he said “while we will be able to stabilise a number of projects in the next four years, a new government will take at least one and a-half years to settle down,” he said.

President Jonathan who explained that his meeting with religious leaders was informed by his inability to see them during the PDP presidential campaign rallies all over the country, announced that he would meet Muslim leaders in Kaduna on Sunday.

The President used the occasion to thank both Christians and Muslims for their consistent prayers for peace in the nation even as he enjoined them not to relent in praying for peaceful April general elections devoid of violence.

Explaining why he can never advocate violence even as a candidate in the presidential election, he said “We need peace in this country and no matter the best intention, if there is crisis nothing will work and no investment nor development can take place.”

President Jonathan who briefed the Christian leaders on his candidacy in the presidential elections, also asked for their support and that of their congregations while appealing to them to continue to pray for peace, preach non-violence and stand for what is good and condemn what is bad.

The National President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, who responded on behalf of other leaders, said they will continue to pray for the peace of the land and its leaders while expressing their support for President Jonathan’s candidacy.

“As Church leaders we are proud of you and we are looking forward to your success and believe God can do for you what you cannot do for yourself by granting you what you desire.”
